CDL Endorsements Explained: Which Ones Do You Need?
A breakdown of every CDL endorsement — HazMat, Tanker, Doubles/Triples, and more — plus how they boost your earning potential.
CDL endorsements are additional qualifications added to your commercial driver's license that authorize you to operate specific types of vehicles or carry certain cargo. Each endorsement opens up new job opportunities and typically comes with higher pay.
Available CDL Endorsements
H — Hazardous Materials (HazMat)
Allows you to transport hazardous materials including chemicals, explosives, and radioactive materials. This is one of the most valuable endorsements because of the specialized nature of the work.
- Requirements: Written knowledge test + TSA background check
- Pay boost: $5,000-$15,000/year more than non-HazMat drivers
- Renewal: Every 5 years (TSA check every 5 years)
N — Tanker
Required for driving any vehicle carrying liquid in bulk (over 119 gallons). This includes fuel tankers, milk tankers, and chemical tankers.
- Requirements: Written knowledge test
- Pay boost: $3,000-$8,000/year
X — HazMat + Tanker Combined
If you get both H and N endorsements, you receive an X endorsement. This qualifies you to haul hazardous liquids in tanker vehicles — the highest-paid endorsement combination.
- Pay boost: $8,000-$20,000/year
T — Doubles/Triples
Allows you to pull double or triple trailers. Used primarily by LTL (Less Than Truckload) carriers like FedEx Freight and Old Dominion.
- Requirements: Written knowledge test
- Pay boost: $2,000-$5,000/year
P — Passenger
Required for vehicles carrying 16+ passengers. Needed for bus drivers, charter services, and some shuttle operations.
- Requirements: Written test + skills test in a passenger vehicle
S — School Bus
Required to operate a school bus. Requires the P endorsement first.
- Requirements: Written test + skills test + additional background check
Which Endorsements Should You Get?
For maximum earning potential in trucking, we recommend:
- HazMat (H) — The single biggest pay increase
- Tanker (N) — Combine with HazMat for the X endorsement
- Doubles/Triples (T) — Opens up LTL carrier jobs
Getting all three gives you access to the highest-paying CDL jobs in the industry.
